Description

Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, more fondly known as MESS, is an archive of electronic sound machines.

From the outside, MESS's slender studio mimics its surroundings: lots of glass, lots of metal, lots of wood. On closer inspection it starts to reveal itself: dials, speakers, cords and machines lined up in psychedelic harmony.

As a visitor to the space, it's hard not to feel inspired by the likes of the Theremin, a 1934 instrument that uses two antennas to turn hand gestures in empty space into sound. Just beside it sit its more mechanical cousins, the VCS3 MK1 and VCS3 MK2, twins of the synth world, tempting visitors with a sense of "what happens when I do this?"

Just as striking are the behemoth 73-75 Paperface and the Buchla 200/200e/Clone System, pillars of '70s east and west coast electronic music, bookending the back wall of the studio.

The Buchla is the pillar of this work - floating in a spacey abyss.
